Since the start of the 2020s, coffee organizations have increasingly embraced circular economy concepts (ICO 2023). By merging circular agriculture and circular health (Capua 2020), we define CHC as follows:
Circular Health Coffee (CHC) is a holistic approach to coffee production, from farm to roaster, that integrates principles of circular agriculture, circular economy, and circular health to enhance the overall wellness of people, plants, and ecosystems. This approach emphasizes organic regenerative farming practices, waste reduction, and resource efficiency, ensuring health benefits for all elements within the coffee value chain. Continuous improvement is driven by peer-reviewed research, field innovation, and feedback from supply chain partners and consumers.
We also refer to CHC as holistic coffee, a market-friendly term. Holistic coffee offers a new reason to choose coffee: while it must taste good and meet high-quality standards, it must also promote well-being. The Holistic/CHC approach examines the plant’s health and environment together, and how both factors influence the development of beneficial compounds.
The nine-stage Circular Health Coffee Cycle shows how every step from seed to cup can be guided by health, sustainability, and shared responsibility. Researchers, producers, roasters, and consumers all participate and are critical to the cycle.
Circular Health Coffee (CHC) is not just “better coffee.” It’s a completely different kind of coffee. It’s produced purposefully for health, using regenerative methods, verified by lab testing, and designed to support the wellness of the drinker, the grower, and the planet. Like "nutrition bars" or "gluten-free" foods, CHC offers consumers a specific purpose and identity. People are increasingly seeking coffees with antioxidant activity and features that align with personal health goals. People are now choosing coffee for health benefits, reshaping the industry and consumer expectations. Billions worldwide enjoy coffee daily for taste and caffeine; CHC suggests adding wellness to the list.
There is no single healthiest coffee, because health is personal. Around the world, outstanding organic and regenerative producers are creating beautiful coffees, and no one company can claim them all. The strength of this category is choice, giving consumers clarity and confidence to find what suits them best. But clarity requires proof. Instagram posts are not enough. Companies must back up their claims with transparent standards, photos, videos, and certificates of analysis. Circular Health Coffee is about more than taste or trends—it is a path toward wellness, accountability, and integrity in every cup.
Find the best CHC for your own wellness journey. There may be many or there may be only one... and the "best" or "healthiest" is up to you.
CHC is a category of coffee defined by health integrity, ecological accountability, and scientific verification. It goes beyond flavor by requiring measurable contributions to human and environmental well-being.
Join us in shaping Circular Health Coffee. We’re inviting health professionals, producers, importers, roasters, researchers, wellness leaders, and coffee lovers to help define trusted standards that prioritize health, sustainability, and transparency from seed to cup.
Circular Health Coffee grows from a long tradition that links personal, environmental, and planetary wellness. The idea that our health depends on the health of our surroundings can be traced back to ancient Greek medical thought, which emphasized that food, water, and environment shape the body itself.
In modern times, the One Health movement brought this vision into practice. Thinkers such as Rudolf Virchow and later Calvin Schwabe highlighted the close ties between human, animal, and ecosystem health. One Health became a unifying framework that called on medicine, agriculture, and environmental science to work together.
In 2020, Dr Ilaria Capua expanded this concept with her work on Circular Health. She urged us to see ourselves as responsible actors in the circle of life, guardians of the planet, and innovators of a model of health that is sustainable and respectful of all stakeholders.
Circular Health Coffee carries that spirit forward. It combines regenerative and organic farming with scientific validation, creating coffee that is not only enjoyable but also protective of the drinker, supportive of farmers, and restorative for the planet.
